SVU versus The Rotten Cherries Bout Wrap Up 4/27/13

This past weekend the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls’ (LVRG) Special Vixens Unit (SVU) bouted against the Black Rose Roller’s Rotten Cherries.  Traveling from Hanover, PA, the Black Rose Rollers were a virtual wild card coming into this bout, as LVRG did not know what to expect in their abilities. However, LVRG showed a commanding presence immediately in the first few minutes of game play. Breaking out from the pack were LVRG jammers Toxic Shock, Catalina Spine Mixer, Christie Winkler and rookie Thelma Van.

Within the first handful of jams, LVRG’s jammers were able to secure a 73-3 lead over the Rotten Cherries.   LVRG looked strong and were able to secure the majority of lead jammer statuses. However, the Black Rose Rollers were able to capitalize on their power jam advantage that they had in the first half. LVRG had three power jams, and the Black Rose Rollers had five.  Those additional power jams allowed the Black Rose team to catch up in points, but they were still defended aggressively by LVRG’s strong blocking line including Phish Tahko, Tortelina Temptress and Cagey Rage.  Even with high penalties from the LVRG bench, the Rotten Cherries still fell short in the first half of game play with a half time score favoring LVRG of 142-82.

MVPs - Toxic Shock from LVRG and Slamorous from BR
At half time, LVRG’s Captain, Wayward Stay, gave her teammates an additional boost of energy and confidence with advice and motivation moving forward. Her advice was to continue to protect the inside line and to focus on securing lead jammer status. LVRG did just that following the second half as they secured over 84% of the second half’s available lead jammer statuses.   Notably, LVRG Jammer Toxic Shock produced a 29 point jam followed by a 25 point jam by Catalina Spine Mixer.  Notable jams by the Rotten Cherries included a 24 point jam by #4, Polly Sack R’Hyde and a 20 point jam by #11 Miss Fit.

Towards the end of the second half, LVRG blockers DTainHer, Double Barrel Hot Gunz and Daisy Destructo were relentless in their pursuit of hunting down the Black Rose jammers.  Daisy Destructo in particular was seen hitting their jammers over and over and over again.  In the second half of game play, LVRG managed to score an additional 182 points, whereas the Rotten Cherries were held to only 36 points.  The match resulted in a win for LVRG’s Special Vixen Unit with a score of 324-118.

Looking ahead, LVRG’s Hissy Fits will be taking on Harrisburg Area Roller Derby’s (HARD) WFTDA team.   LVRG is considered to be the heavy favorite based on flattrackstats.com. It is currently predicted that HARD will score only 3 points for every 8 points that LVRG scores.  This game is very important for LVRG as it will help the team increase its national rankings.  The game is not to be underestimated though as veteran skaters from HARD are returning and will surely challenge LVRG’s abilities.
LVRG will bout HARD on May 11th, doors open at 5:00p.m, game starts at 6:00p.m.

Also, come meet your favorite Roller Girl this weekend for QUADRO DE MAYO (May 4th) at Roosevelt's. There will be drink and food specials along with all of your LVRG favorites.

All functions will be held at the Independence Family Fun Center, 4345 Independence Dr, Schnecksville, PA.

Lehigh Valley Rollergirls Open Recruit - May 20th

So you think you have what it takes to rip up the track, knock down the opposition, and join a great fun loving sports family?

We are looking for new skaters and are introducing our FAST TRACK option along with our New Recruit Boot Camp.  On May 20th, we will be hosting a New Recruit Orientation so that you can find out more about joining our team.

We will introduce to you some of our current skaters, explain the requirements to join the team and give you the low down on how to become a Lehigh Valley Rollergirl.

When joining our league, you will be asked to take a preliminary assessment based on the WFTDA minimum skills. The minimum skills requirements are found here: http://wftda.com/resources/wftda-minimum-skill-requirements.pdf

If you fully pass this assessment, you will be given the FAST TRACK option to become a full member. If you do not pass the assessment, but are able to meet our minimum New Recruit requirements, you will asked to join our New Recruit Boot Camp. This camp lasts about 7 weeks and will teach you all of the skills to become a roller girl.

Here's what to expect:

May 20th - 7:00p.m.  New Recruit Orientation

You’ll be introduced to some of the skaters and get a synopsis of what is expected at practice. You will learn a little bit about our history, our practices and of course, you will see a demonstration of what to expect at try-outs.

May 23rd -8:00p.m. New Recruit Try-Outs

Here’s what you should expect to perform to be accepted into our New Recruit Boot Camp program:

 - Balance (Skate around the track balancing on one leg on the straight aways)
-Cross Overs (Skating in good stance while performing cross overs)
-One Knee Falls (Showing a proficiency in falling safely on one knee and returning to a good skating stance)
 - Plow Stops (Showing a proficiency in stopping safely using a plow stop and returning to a good skating stance)
 - 2 Minute Timed Laps (Minimum 8 laps)

Any skater who passes the try-out with proficiency will be invited to the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls New Recruit Boot Camp Training.

Skaters who pass the New Recruit minimum standards and wish to be tested on the full WFTDA minimum skills requirements at this time to qualify for FULL status may also do so.

May 30th - First Day of the New Recruit Boot Camp Training

What does our boot camp entail? It is approximately 7 weeks of training a long side our veterans teaching you all the basics and advanced moves and skills to become a roller girl. It is intense and rewarding. In no time, after completing the training, you will be scrimmage eligible and able to make rosters for game play.

All functions will be held at the Independence Family Fun Center, 4345 Independence Dr, Schnecksville, PA.

If you are interested in becoming a FULL or RECREATIONAL member of LVRG  or would like to try out for our New Recruit Boot Camp, please contact us for more information.

Hell Razin' Hussy- LVRG's Skater of the Month

When it comes to historic Lehigh Valley Rollergirl (LVRG) skaters, one person comes to mind, and that skater is # 4Q, Hell Razin’ Hussy (Mary Weeks).  Since late 2006, Mary has played an important role in not only the development of the league here in the Lehigh Valley, but also in volunteering in coaching roles throughout the last few seasons.

Mary works very hard to evolve the league to become a better one. She is LVRG’s inter-league coordinator. As inter-league coordinator, she seeks out other teams to play against the Hissy Fits and The Special Vixens Unit.  She stated that she makes "sure they would be a good match up/challenge and try to take into consideration where we would be as a team at the time that game will take place.  I keep a close eye on our rankings throughout the year as well to see how we progress as well as our upcoming opponents.  On game day, I am the point person for the other team, I make them feel welcome and review house rules with them.”

We asked Hell Razin’ Hussy what her outlook was for the 2013 LVRG season. She replied “we have a great, solid group of girls this year.  This year is different. We all seem to have the same common goals - pushing ourselves, achieving our personal goals and WINNING!  I am excited for this year and I feel we will make it into WFTDA Division 2 for next year!” Mary’s personal goal for the 2013 season is to rank as one of the top 5 skater on the LVRG WFTDA Charter by increasing her laps and endurance.

Fast Fun Facts about Hell Razin’ Hussy:
1.  Her favorite food is steak, but she also loves brussel sprouts
2.  She took ballet in her 20’s and loves to line dance.
3.  Her hair is sacred to her, she likes to dye it, style it and make it stand out.
4.  She used to be a fire fighter.
5.  Other sports she has played include soccer and softball.

Hell Razin Hussy also owns her own business named Hand It Over! Her company specializes in hand made purses and unique gifts including bird cage veils, flowers and bows for hairs.  She has even made “I<3 LVRG” bows available for purchase at any of our bouts. You can also find her selling her goods at local craft fairs and car shows.  You can also find her store on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hand-it-Over/223185607766468.

Come watch the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls’ next bout on April 27th when they take on Black Rose’s Rotten Cherries.  Doors open at 5:00p.m, whistle at 6:00p.m.

All functions will be held at the Independence Family Fun Center, 4345 Independence Dr, Schnecksville, PA.
